Samsung Exhibit II 4G powered by 1Ghz Snapdragon Processor

Introduction

The Samsung Exhibit II 4G is aimed primarily at commitment-challenged consumers. Being one of the quickest product sequels we’ve seen in a while, the device is marketed mostly as a Pay as you go phone, which offers you the full Android functionality at the affordable price of $200 with no contract required.

Being only the fourth largest wireless provider in the United States, T-Mobile has always positioned itself as the budget alternative to its significantly larger competitors. This year, the magenta colored provider has become even more aggressive in its pricing by offering all-you-can-eat monthly plans, which require no contract.

In case the device looks somewhat familiar to you, you’ve probably guessed it right. The Exhibit II 4G is essentially the U.S. version of the Samsung Galaxy W. In order to fit its attractive price tag however, some of its hardware has been replaced with less capable options. The CPU of the Exhibit II is a 1GHz Snapdragon, compared to the 1.4 GHz Scorpion core of the Galaxy W. Its camera unit on the other hand, comes straight from 2008 with its 3.2MP resolution and VGA video recording.
As always, we will follow with the full breakdown of the Samsung Exhibit II 4G by going over its key features and main disadvantages.

Key Features

  • Quad-band GSM and dual-band 3G support
  • 14.4 Mbps HSDPA; 5.76 Mbps HSUPA
  • 1GHz Snapdragon CPU; Adreno 205 GPU; Qualcomm MSM 8255 chipset
  • 512MB RAM; 1GB ROM; microSD card support (up to 32GB)
  • 3.7” LCD display with WVGA (800 x 480 pixels) resolution; 252ppi pixel density
  • Front-facing VGA camera for video calls
  • Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread with TouchWiz 4.0 launcher
  • Rich video format support out of the box
  • Wi-Fi calling enabled
  • Accelerometer, proximity and ambient light sensors

Main disadvantages

  • Design is a bit dull
  • 3.2MP camera with lowly VGA video recording; no dedicated key
  • All plastic construction
  • High amount of preloaded apps from T-Mobile
  • No memory card enclosed
As you can notice above, the Samsung Exhibit II 4G will certainly not end up on your list of dream phones. It is not aiming for it though. With a decent spec sheet and software which comes straight from the top of the Samsung Android ranks, paired with a low price tag with non contract, the smartphone makes quite a lot of sense.

BlackBerry Curve 9360

Introduction

This QWERTY messenger is compact and to the point, with clean and grown up design. The Curve 9360 is sure it can deliver, its confidence unshaken by unknowns and uncertainties. RIM must've enjoyed the safety and comfort of doing what they're best at.

The new Bold flagship and the next Torch generation did the Curve 9360 a favor by taking the pressure of high expectations off it. All it needs to do is focus on the important stuff: giving business users and heavy texters the quality service they deserve. And by the way, it should be the best Curve experience they ever had.

The higher-res screen, robust processor and the new BlackBerry OS 7.0 with NFC support propel the 9360 into an entirely different dimension. Well out of reach for the Curve as we knew it - stuck at QVGA screens and 2 or 3 MP cameras. In fact, it's an option that Bold 9700 and 9780 users would do well to consider. Blasphemy - upgrading from a Bold to a Curve! Well, no more. Just take a closer look at the specs.

Key features

  • Quad-band GSM and tri-band 3G support
  • 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 2 Mbps HSUPA
  • 2.46" 16M-color TFT landscape display of HVGA+ resolution (480x360)
  • Full QWERTY keyboard
  • Optical trackpad
  • 800MHz processor
  • 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM
  • Wi-Fi b/g/n connectivity
  • NFC support
  • GPS with A-GPS connectivity
  • Bluetooth v2.1
  • 5 megapixel fixed focus, VGA video recording
  • BlackBerry OS 7
  • Hot-swappable microSD card slot (up to 32GB), 4GB card in the box
  • 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Decent audio quality
  • Office document editor
  • Smart dialing
  • DivX and XviD video support

Main disadvantages

  • BlackBerry Internet Service account is a must to enjoy all phone features
  • Poor still camera quality
  • Bland text-only submenus
  • Rigid call and navigation keys
  • Fixed focus camera
  • No HD video
  • Glossy back panel prevents good grip, easily greased up

With the Bold stepping across into touchscreen, the Curve has new found space for growth. And the popular line of BlackBerries didn't hesitate to seize the opportunity. The Curve 9360 is a robust upgrade of its predecessor and a huge step forward for the entire lineup.

Uninspiring audio output

The BlackBerry Curve 9360 performance in our audio quality test is best described as just below average. The smartphone isn't among the loudest we have seen, nor has it got the cleanest output, but it's not terrible either.

With no resistance applied to the line-out (i.e. the active external amplifier) the Curve 9360 did quite decently. Its signal-to-noise, dynamic range and stereo crosstalk reading were really good and the frequency response was quite good for the most part. Intermodulation distortion was a quite a bit higher than average for that scenario, though.

And when you plug in a pair of headphones quite serious issues arise. The stereo crosstalk goes to levels we have rarely seen before and even more distortion creeps in.

Impressive video player

With so many better options out there, the Curve 9360 is an easy one to overlook if video-watching is a priority. It would be a mistake. The Curve 9360 does a really great job, so you might want to tick that box on your wish list.

The landscape screen is a good start, while the video player itself isn’t bad either. Its styling might not be too impressive, but the functionality is mostly there.
There are the usual playback controls when you hit a key or tap on the screen, along with a dedicated fit/zoom to screen button.

The Curve 9360 video player is said to support DivX, XviD, H.264/MPEG-4 and WMV videos up to 720p resolution. It did manage to play all of the DivX files we threw at it, WMV, MOV and MP4 files up to 720p were no problem either, but the XviD videos didn’t go that easy. Some of the files were OK, while others where just incompatible. It seems it's a bit rate or audio thing, but we won't count on that XviD support much.

Gallery copy-pasted from OS 6

The image gallery hasn't changed since the OS 6, so it should be familiar to all BlackBerry users already.
Images can be browsed in grid mode or viewed as a standard list. There’s search by name here too, but we’re not the type that remembers the names of our image files, so we won’t count that as an extra.

Photos can only be browsed in landscape mode or you can manually rotate them. Unfortunately the Curve 9360 has no built-in accelerometer to provide automatic rotation.
You can skip to the next photo without returning to the gallery – you just flick your finger over the trackpad and you are done.

Samsung Galaxy S II SkyFire with 1.5Ghz dual core processor

Introduction

Announced together with the HTC Vivid, the smartphone is among the first LTE enabled devices, compatible with AT&T’s all new LTE network. The smartphone is certainly a welcome addition to the U. S. Samsung Galaxy S II lineup, as LTE was the only connectivity flavor missing in the lineup so far.

If you find the device looks somewhat familiar, there is a good reason for it. The Skyrocket is almost 100% identical to the T-Mobile Galaxy S II, which we came to like quite a lot. The handset has the same size and uses the same hardware, save for two major differences. First, the Skyrocket does not have NFC connectivity out of the box, even though it is capable of it. The second is much easier to notice – it is the LTE radio on board.

While the Galaxy S II purists might scoff at the presence of the Qualcomm-made CPU on board (the Exynos is still the fastest dual-core silicon we have seen), we must point out that it is the reason why the smartphone is capable of working on 4G networks. As always, you will find the rest of the Skyrocket’s key features below.

Key Features

  • Quad-band GSM and dual-band 3G support
  • 21 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 HSUPA support
  • LTE network connectivity
  • 4.52" 16M-color Super AMOLED Plus capacitive touchscreen of WVGA (480 x 800 pixel) resolution
  • Android OS v2.3.5 with TouchWiz 4 launcher
  • 1.5 GHz Scorpion dual-core CPU, Adreno 220 GPU, Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 chipset, 1GB of RAM
  • 8 MP wide-angle lens autofocus camera with LED flash, face, smile and blink detection
  • 1080p HD video recording at 30fps
  • Hot swappable SIM and microSD cards
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n support
  • GPS with A-GPS connectivity; Digital compass
  • 16GB internal storage, microSD slot
  • Accelerometer, gyroscope and proximity sensor
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Charging MHL microUSB port and TV-out (1080p) support
  • Stereo Bluetooth v3.0
  • Great audio quality
  • Slim waistline at only 9.5mm and low weight (130g)
  • 2MP secondary video-call camera
  • Full Flash support and GPU-acceleration for the web browser permit 1080p flash video playback
  • Document editor
  • File manager comes preinstalled
  • The richest video format support we have seen

Main disadvantages

  • No dedicated camera key
  • No NFC support out of the box (a future update should address this issue)
  • WVGA screen resolution is not on par with the rest of the competition in this class

As you can probably notice above, the phone has more than one can possibly need in terms of sheer specs. The only major letdown we can think of is the WVGA resolution of the Skyrocket’s screen. At a time when HD screens begin to pop up with increasing frequency, we do believe that an Android flagship should be offering more than 800x480 pixels of resolution. The Super AMOLED Plus unit of the Skyrocket however, still trounces most of the competition with superior contrast and viewing angles.

Samsung Galaxy Young a.k.a S5360

The Samsung Galaxy Y is a smartphone approved for all audiences. Perhaps in hindsight, our Galaxy Note review should've been rated PG. But well yeah, we're always wiser in hindsight. Anyway, you don’t just wake up one morning wanting a superphone like the Note. You need a place to start.
The Samsung Galaxy Y is one little step above dumbphones. It won’t be long before you know how big this step really was. Android is friendly, especially in a package like the Galaxy Y, and highly addictive. And there's plenty to explore.
The Samsung Galaxy Y is most likely someone's first smartphone. It comes on the cheap so you don't have to ask yourself if you really need all the extra features. Soon enough, you'll be wondering how you could live without them.

And no, the Galaxy Y isn't full of the latest tech. It keeps things neat and simple at a very reasonable price. There's a good package of preinstalled apps and a full connectivity set. The reasonably fast processor and the very recent Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread are a bit of surprise. This is a basic smartphone but one that looks up-to-date.

Key Features

  • Quad-Band GSM and dual-band 3G support
  • 7.2 Mbps HSDPA
  • 3” 256K-color QVGA TFT touchscreen
  • ARMv6 830MHz processor, 290MB RAM
  • Android OS v2.3.3 (Gingerbread) with TouchWiz UI
  • 160MB of internal storage, hot-swappable MicroSD slot, 2GB card included
  • 2MP fixed-focus camera with geotagging
  • GPS receiver with A-GPS
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS
  • 3.5mm audio jack
  • Document viewer
  • Accelerometer and proximity sensor
  • Swype text input
  • MicroUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth 2.1
  • Social network integration

Main disadvantages

  • Low screen resolution limits choice of apps
  • No touchscreen haptics
  • Fixed focus camera
  • No secondary camera
  • No camera flash, no dedicated camera key
  • QVGA video recording @ 15fps
  • No earphones in the bundle
  • No Adobe Flash support
The Galaxy Y won't win any awards for innovation and performance but on the bright side, it does offer the full smartphone experience within budget. Aimed at the young and novice smartphone users, it focuses on the connectivity and good social skills. The screen resolution and sub-par imaging are the most prominent among the inevitable compromises.

Up-to-speed on Gingerbread

Despite being on the low end of Android, the Galaxy Y is quite up-to-date with Gingerbread 2.3.5. The topping of choice is Samsung's home-baked TouchWiz launcher and the result is quite good - the low resolution and limited screen estate aside.
Here's a video demo that will show you the whole thing in action:

Final words

Y stands for entry-level phones in the company's recent naming system. Phones for youths and emerging markets. The Galaxy Y is at the bottom of the Android food chain. It joins the likes of the Galaxy Mini, the Gio and the Fit at the wide base of a pyramid that eventually peaks in the next flagship.
There's a long way from the Galaxy Y to the company's top earners. It will appeal mostly to people who are new to the smartphone market and should rack up strong support for Samsung.
Android with TouchWiz and the package of preinstalled apps and services offer a more complete mobile experience to people coming from a feature phone. And that's available at a rock-bottom price. No, the Galaxy Y has nothing to offer to experienced smartphone users. It's the experience builder for the next generation of Samsung customers.
The company is taking the entry-level smartphone market seriously. The Galaxy Y joins a lineup of similar handsets. The Galaxy Mini offers a marginally better camera and slightly larger display. The Galaxy Fit boasts a 5 MP camera and bigger screen. However the Galaxy Y does offer the most recent release of Android Gingerbread and a higher-clocked 830Mhz CPU.

IPad has '80% of North American tablet market'

Apple's iPad captured 80% of the tablet computer market in the US and Canada in April to July, a report has said.
The iPad accounted for six million of all 7.5 million tablets shipped in North America during the second quarter of 2011, according to research group Strategy Analytics.
It described Apple as a "formidable market leader".
Yet it added that Amazon - which is expected to unveil its own tablet this week - could become a big challenger.
'Strong brand'
Stategy Analytics senior analyst Alex Spektor said: "Apple remains a long way ahead of its main rivals such as Motorola, Samsung, RIM, Asus and HTC.
"A combination of cool branding, user-friendly hardware, entertaining services and savvy retail distribution has made Apple a formidable market leader."
According to reports, online retailer Amazon could announce the release of its first tablet as early as Wednesday.
"Provided the pricing, screen size and hardware design are right, Amazon can be one of the main challengers to Apple's dominance," said Neil Mawston, director at Strategy Analytics.
"Like Apple, Amazon has a strong brand, compelling content, sophisticated billing systems and widespread distribution.
"In effect, Amazon's new tablet product represents a good opportunity to place an Amazon shopping cart in the hands of American consumers, offering optimised access to purchasing digital content or physical goods from the Amazon online store."
The continuing popularity of Apple's iPad comes despite its incompatibility with Adobe Flash software, meaning that users cannot view a large number of online videos.
Rivals such as Samsung are quick to highlight in their advertising that their tablets are able to use Flash.
Apple and Samsung, which makes the Galaxy range of tablets, are also continuing a number of legal disputes over patents.
On Monday, Apple declined to comment on reports that it had cut orders for iPad parts from its suppliers because of falling sales.
The study by an Asian analyst of US bank JPMorgan Chase said several suppliers had indicated that Apple had reduced its orders by 25%.
The iPad was first released in April 2010, with the second version, the iPad 2, following in March of this year.

Lucky Tips in Love

1. Know first what you want.

Face and your appearance can be changed, but your character does not. "Chemistry" between you both are fun, but do not rely solely on lust.

2. You must be clear also what you do not want.

By knowing what you would never tolerate from a partner is important. Make a list of "Do not like" and then select the 10 most important. If more than 10, it means you are too picky.

3. Live your life.

Once you know what you desire (and you do not desire) in a relationship, shift your focus to live. You will find that you begin to feel meet with people that match your criteria, and easily those who do not immediately shift.

4. Take a look at the bigger picture.

Do not try too hard, so sometimes you miss some important things that exist. If indeed you are good in concentrating on one thing, you try to retreat a bit and try to see the conditions. Make sure your life was fun and beautiful, do not be too serious in everything.

5. Out of the "nest" you.

Create opportunities to develop your social life, and meet new people. Try changing your routine, you never tried to invite friends to just meet? Try searching for ideas to make a small celebration and make yourself the center of attention!

6. Open your eyes and your behavior.

People who are "lucky" will create and maximize opportunities. Try talking with others at the time shopping and queuing at the cashier. Always ready with a "business card" with your contact information.

7. Always wanted to know.

Do not be satisfied simply with what is visible. Try asking, try to find what lies behind it all, and try to see the answer!

8. Try something new.

The best way to keep everything as it is, is not to try something different. Try to make a difference in your routine, so you'll stay alert. Try to always noticed about whatever happens. Stay open to all opportunities that exist, and use all the best!

9. Always prepare yourself to receive good fortune.

Note the negative messages from yourself, and replace them with all the positive thoughts, eg: "Ah .. I'm not beautiful, it was impossible to make a relationship," try to replace it with "Ah, there is no one passed my criteria, but I'll find it soon enough ". Always surround you with people who can become a good example.

10. Learn from experience (fate) bad.
Try to take steps to prevent the possibility that there are bad all over again, and let what is "bad" was passed. Do not be repeated again bad luck there, try to follow the existing positive elements.

Blood isn't always be sign to a virginity

For those couples who recently married, the first night is always intriguing, whether there will be blood coming out on that first night. The assumption is often wrong is not the first discharge of blood at night indicates that married girls are not virgins anymore.

Discharge of blood on the first night due to the tear in the hymen. Or Hymen The hymen is a thin mucous layer which is located at the entrance of Miss V. This layer forms on every woman is different, there are thick some thin, some with holes.

Because of this, then not all women experience bleeding due to tear the hymen. As for you who bleed any time would vary, there is a bleed at first intercourse, there is after some time you have new bleeding.

According to doctors Vanda Mustika, a consultant sexology, blood should no longer be the benchmark if someone had sexual intercourse before marriage. Basis of a marriage is mutual honesty and trust, so if you and your husband have decided to get married and have been open with each other about their respective past the fact this blood problem will no longer be a problem.

Reduce Sugar Intake if you dont want to be wrinkled faster.

You must have heard that consuming too much sugar will result in weight gain. But experts and researchers found that consuming sugar can cause wrinkles and dull skin.

That said, the natural processes that cause this condition is a process called glycation. It is a condition when blood flow bound to proteins to create molecules called advanced glycation dangerous and end products (AGEs). The more sugar you / create, the more your body to create AGEs.

"The more AGEs accumulate, they will damage the protein required by a domino effect,"explains Fredric Brandt, MD, dermatologist and author of 10 Minutes 10 Years. The most susceptible to damage due to this process is collagen and elastin, protein fibers that keep skin firm and elastic. In fact, collagen is the most prevalent protein for the body. Once damaged, collagen and elastin which should be chewy will become dry and damaged, creating wrinkles and flabby skin. These aging effects start around age 35 years, and increased very rapidly as you age. This was reported by the British Journal of Dermatology.

Besides damaging collagen, excessive sugar consumption will also affect collagen type what you have. Most of the skin are collagen type I, II, and III. Type III is the most stable and durable. Glycation will change the type III to type I, which is the type most susceptible. When this happens, the skin will feel soft, no longer chewy. In addition again, AGEs deactivate the body's natural antioxidant enzymes, making your skin more prone to be damaged when exposed to sun exposure, which is the main cause of skin aging.

So, try to reduce intake of sugar if you do not want your skin look older faster.

Fried eggs, fried chicken, or fried sausage, according to scientists, is a healthy menu to start your day. According to them, breakfast is an important energy supplies for the day. Thus, fatty foods are considered a healthy menu of energy contributor.

From the explanation spokesman International Journal of Obesity Dr Martin Young from the University of Alabama at Birmingham said, "The first food you eat in the morning to determine the course of the program metabolism for the day. The results of this study indicate breakfast fatty foods will maximize both fat and carbohydrates in the body You become energy. "

The conclusion that they can after analyzing the effect of eating some foods and eating time in animal experiments. In the group of mice, those that were fed fatty food after getting out of bed would live the rest of the day with a healthy. In contrast, rats fed carbohydrate foods tend to prefer breakfast to dinner with foods rich in fat.

Accompanying research of Professor Molly Bray added, "Our study produces evidence that if you really want a breakfast with a balanced diet and can provide energy until noon, eat fatty foods."

3 Steps to avoid a child become fat

From time to time, the number of children who are overweight has increased. Still looks cute and adorable, children who are too fat holds great potential for overweight when she grows up.

Some studies also indicate if their child is overweight before they reach the age of 8 years, he has most likely mengalammi obese as adults. Not only that, children who belong to a large body mass index is also at risk for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart attacks.

1. Since pregnancy
It has been much evidence of an association between maternal weight during pregnancy, infant weight at birth, and weight of children at age five. Allegedly, it is connected through a chemical change to the brain and metabolism. Mothers who experienced excessive weight gain during pregnancy can cause the baby is also overweight. Babies get almost all the nutrients it needs through breast milk or formula in the first year of life. So, no need to impose calories and solid foods in infants. Consider increasing infant diet after the age of 9 months.

RIM Block Adult Content in Indonesia

Eventually the company RIM (Research In Motion) also spoke. After a chaotic on blocking the re-sticking Blackberry recently, the Canadian company finally agreed to block pornographic content on their Internet networks, a special territory of Indonesia.

RIM states that the manufacture of these filters is a major priority. RIM will work together with the Indonesian government and all mobile phone companies to implement BlackBerry service providers such blocking.

As was reported earlier, Menkominfo Tifatul Sembiring threatened to block the Blackberry network in Indonesia, if not close the smells of porn content on its Internet network. Tifatul give deadline until January 21, 2011 for RIM to respond to the request.

Blackberry blocking threat is not new to RIM. Previously, the Middle East countries like Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates have threatened to block the Blackberry network in their country due to security issues. Because the application server Blackberry Messenger, Blackberry security features to exchange information between users, has its own server located in Canada, so the contents can not be monitored and the government feared would be a place to exchange ideas between the terrorists so as to endanger state security. But thanks to tough negotiations, finally the two countries 'peace' with RIM.

In Indonesia alone the issue of blocking the Blackberry has been around since long before, but always lost. But this time Menkominfo Tifatul apparently really serious 'pursuit' desires, which makes RIM finally acted.

Indonesia is a potential market for the Asia Pacific Rim. Based on the Boston Consulting Group report, Internet users in Brazil, Russia, China, India, and Indonesia is expected to increase two-fold to 1.2 billion by 2015 from 610 million users.

Where Should the Microsoft SQL Server Be Installed?

Here again, I just read where to install Microsoft SQL Server, I would like to tell you what I just read.

Keeping in mind that the optimum configuration is not always possible, I will describe what I think is the best place to install a Microsoft SQL Server on your network. In a strictly Microsoft network environment (which we all know is not very practical with the number of legacy systems out there), Microsoft talks of domain structures. While this book will not stray into domain configuration issues, there are some fundamental pieces of information that will apply whether you are setting up in a totally Microsoft environment or a NetWare/Microsoft mix. Your data server should be used solely as a server on the network. Try not to place additional services or processes on your data server, because they will add to overhead and slow the performance of the data services.

Primary domain controllers (PDCs) have the useful role of logging people on and off your Microsoft network. They also handle synchronization with backup domain controllers (BDCs) on your network. Any type of domain controller is not the optimal location to install Microsoft SQL Server. Gateway Services for NetWare is another of the services you should consider moving off your Microsoft SQL Server. This service allows for NetWare files to be shared through Microsoft shares on your server. Although this is often a convenient way to get to your files, putting these files on your database server adds to the overhead of that machine. You should strive to install your server on as clean a machine as possible—one that will only be used for database services. This means that you should not set up Microsoft SQL Server on a primary or backup domain controller. Keep shared file access off your database server. Having users copy files to and from the server will move the disk heads unnecessarily. Disk I/O is the slowest thing your data server will do. Do everything you can to keep it to a minimum. Also avoid sharing printers, modems, or like services on your Microsoft SQL Server. All of these processes are burst performance-related loads; Murphy’s Law will always ensure that one of the biggest file transfers or print jobs will hit your server at the same time a large query is running, causing the whole system to appear to hang.

As you might be noticing, Microsoft appears to be moving toward a distributed server network. All the servers do not have to be on independent machines, but this configuration will help distribute the load across your network, allowing you to put lighter-weight and lower-cost servers in place for mail and file services and put your money where production is, such as on data services. This distribution can be a good thing, but many companies fail to recognize this until they have put all their eggs (applications, services, and files) in one or two baskets (servers). Plan for growth. By definition, databases will grow given even normal use. Over time any system that is being used in production will expand not only in feature and function, but in the amount of data as well. If possible, place Microsoft SQL Server on a machine by itself. Install it as a server that is part of a domain (provided you are using the Microsoft domain model). Place any other applications on separate machines when possible. If multiple applications are running on the same machine, you are complicating the process unnecessarily. In addition, beware of disk-intensive applications running on your database machine. If an application is writing to disk and Microsoft SQL Server is writing to disk, these processes will compete for disk I/O and slow down both applications.

Note: The cost of adding a low-cost machine with a good-size disk to the network versus the cost in performance by having all these services running on the same box quickly becomes a non-issue.

Prior to installing Microsoft SQL Server, you should create a domain or local user account under which the SQL Executive service will perform its tasks. This account setup is covered in detail in the next chapter, which includes step-by-step installation on a few different machines.

What Are Character Sets And Sort Orders?

Okay, see you again in SQL black book, I just read the book and tell what I see, so I didn't teach you, never :)

Another preinstallation issue is choosing a character set and sort order. A character set is the basic text and symbols that are loaded in your system. Regardless of the character set you choose, the first 128 characters are the same. The extended characters, including language-specific characters, reside in the remaining half of the character set. Your decision depends on whether you are doing business overseas or in other languages and need to store text and special characters. In most cases, the default is fine and should provide you with what you need to function.

You should make this determination prior to installation. Changing character sets can be a daunting task with many system ramifications. If your company is concerned about character sets, chances are you are experienced in these issues and this feature should be nothing new to you.

Another interesting issue concerns sort orders. Sort orders determine the way the data is organized when stored by Microsoft SQL Server. The default sort order for Microsoft SQL Server is dictionary order and case-insensitive. This is fine and probably the best default setting. It is not, however, the fastest setting you can use on your system.

Note: Microsoft is not trying to slow you down. Most programmers are not as careful as they could be and do not always exercise consistent case sensitivity when they write code. The default for Microsoft SQL Server should be used if you have legacy systems that might contain this kind of SQL code.

The fastest sort order is binary. The use of this setting has some impact on how you perform certain tasks down the road, so choose it carefully. It will change all of your SQL scripts, stored procedures, and client pass-through code to be case-sensitive. If you type a statement and use a different case than was specified when the table was created, you will get an error message. Say, for instance, you have a table called MyTable on your system. To access it, you type “mytable”. An “Object Not Found” error is returned.

Binary sort order poses a few issues in developing client software, and great care should be taken when using it. Your ad hoc queries might not return what you expect back from the server, either. A capital “F” does not equal a lowercase “f”. Reports are not inherently smart enough to tell the difference, and your code needs to allow for this.

If you store, access, and check for case sensitivity on your entire system, binary is the way to go. I have configured two identical machines installed from scratch with the same data sets stored in different sort orders. My tests have proven that binary is faster for a lot of common operations. If you are putting third-party applications on your server, make sure they run as expected in this sort order. If in doubt, call the vendor or technical support for the product in question.

I often use binary sort orders as an example of a setting that restricts programmers in a way they might find difficult. Because of the case-sensitive nature, programmers must write code with more care than they would otherwise. The end result is faster, but getting there might be more difficult.

Users of the system should also be considered when selecting binary sort orders. If a system allows for ad hoc reports or queries and a user does not know that the data is stored with case sensitivity, he or she might not get the expected results. This can be dangerous when converting legacy systems. Make the decision to use a binary sort order only after carefully weighing the impact on your entire organization.

Note: Under “Performance Comparisons” in the Microsoft SQL Server Books Online, select Topic 5 from the SQL Server 6.0 Setup Guide for more information.

Another consideration in choosing a character set and a sort order is whether you are setting up a distributed server environment. If you are, you must use compatible character sets and sort orders among your servers. If you are going to share, replicate, or distribute data, use a common character set and sort order throughout your enterprise. Do not forget that in business today we must occasionally share data with other companies. If your system interacts with another company’s system, again make sure the character sets and sort orders are compatible.

What is a Database SQL?

What is A Database?

Databases are also considered containers. They hold the objects that make up your server’s purpose in life. Tables, views, indexes, and stored procedures are all objects that reside in your database. You can, and often will, have multiple user-defined databases residing on your server. These databases are where the production information and code reside. Other databases are installed on your server to give it the intelligence it needs to function; I will cover these databases in a few different areas throughout the book. However, our focus will be on setting up a production system, not on the inner workings of Microsoft SQL Server.

One of the most common mistakes new users make is to confuse the device and the database. You place your databases within your devices. To understand this, think of a database as a division within your company. For instance, Human Resources deal with very specific kinds of information, so you would logically put all of that type of information in a container for centralized management and access control. Accounting is an area that often requires more security than others, and the information generated from this area would justly be placed in a separate container for security reasons. You would not scatter information for the Human Resources department throughout all the offices; instead, you would put all those functions and resources in one place. The same applies to databases and good database design.

An interesting point for all PC-based database programmers is that Microsoft SQL Server does not store the information or data in the database. Remember, the database is a container. Instead, the server stores your data in a table. The index you create for fast access to data is not stored in the table with the raw data; it is stored as another object within the database. A database is a collection of objects. This concept is not hard to follow, but it is different enough from the organization of other database programs that it is sometimes a stumbling block for the small-system programmer. An MIS department accustomed to dBASE or Microsoft FoxPro databases will struggle with this at first. Since this structure is common to most large database systems today, you should become familiar with it.

In addition, you should focus on the database level when administrating your system’s security. Your users will be granted a logon ID for connecting to the server, but this does not allow them to get to the data they need. This is done by adding users and groups to each database individually on a need-to-know basis. This method of security keeps unwanted users from browsing where they should not while allowing others to do their jobs.

Returning to the office analogy, let’s compare a database to the Accounting department in your company. This department might have a door you must pass through, and once you pass through that door, you would see all the cubicles and desks where the actual work is done. This door might be locked in the evening or even require a passkey to enter during the day.

The same idea can be applied to a database. The records and files are not strewn around the office; they reside in filing cabinets and in folders or ledgers for ease of access. These organizational tools can be related to Microsoft SQL Server objects. You use tables, stored procedures, and indexes to find what you need when you need it.

The security model that Microsoft SQL Server uses is also similar to the passkey entry requirement. No one gets access without a valid key or password. I will not try to recommend a security method here because of the diverse requirements in the market today. However, I will say that Microsoft SQL Server will accommodate a strict security model very well and still allow for the simple, trusting models required by smaller companies growing into Microsoft SQL Server.

During installation of Microsoft SQL Server, you will not be concerned with these divisions or security, but you should make a few assumptions on the amount of disk space you will need to accommodate these areas and how you will accommodate these needs.

What is a Device in SQL?

What Is A Device?

The terms device and database are often confused. The basic storage container for Microsoft SQL Server is a device, which is an operating system file that resides on the physical disk, or hard drive, of the server. A device is the container that allocates space to Microsoft SQL Server on the server’s hard drive. Microsoft SQL Server does not acquire disk space on the server dynamically. You must specify the amount of disk to set aside for it to use. This allocation is accomplished through the device.

The space that you set aside for devices is essentially lost to the rest of the machine. A device cannot be made smaller. You can, however, expand a device to make more room for your databases to grow—provided you have enough free disk space. You can—and will—have multiple devices on your server. Databases can span multiple devices to accommodate their growth. A device carries with it a file extension of .DAT. This is important to know if you are in a multiple-programmer environment and are using the data server for file services as well as data services. For example, in File Manager or Windows NT Explorer, note the physical file C:\MSSQL\Data\master.dat. You can highlight this file, hit the Delete key, and if it is not currently being used by Microsoft SQL Server, it will be deleted like any other file. If it is in use, Microsoft SQL Server and the operating system will not allow it to be deleted.

This prevents an accidental delete. The only acceptable way to recover the space given to a device is to drop the device and re-create it with a smaller size. When you drop a device, ensure that you go to the file system and delete the physical file. If you do not remove the device file, you will receive an error message when you re-create the device with the same name. Once you remove the file, you use the Enterprise Manager to re-create the device with a smaller size. You can then restore any contents of the old device to the new device, provided all the objects fit in the new space.

Try to avoid creating one big device that takes up the whole hard drive. Doing so will not give you the flexibility you need from the server. You will be very limited in your options down the road and will have to jump through some fairly complicated hoops to change this configuration on a production machine.

From a slightly different perspective, a device can be thought of as a large, empty office. This space is rented or leased by your company. If your business expands beyond the square footage you have set aside, you must acquire more office space to accommodate the growth. This can be achieved by expanding the existing office into adjoining space in the same building or perhaps in another office building altogether.

This growth scenario applies to your devices as well. I will use this and other analogies a lot throughout this book to help you associate Microsoft SQL Server to a real-world example. Many of my students have found they frequently do not remember the exact piece of information they need but can draw on these analogies to figure out what to do.
