The wife, Julie Andrews, and her children were dying beside Edwards, as quoted by the New York Times. According to his publicist, the director's death was caused by complications of pneumonia suffered.
Edwards was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. But, his family moved to Los Angeles shortly after birth. He graduated from Beverly Hills High, and had fought with the Coast Guard during World War II.
When he returned to Hollywood after the war, he worked briefly as an actor before co-authored the first scenario, a film titled 'Panhandle' in 1946. After that, he turned into the script writer and eventually became director of radio, TV, and more many other films.
The period of the 1960s was the golden period, with a number of landmark films like 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' (1961), 'Days of Wine and Roses' (1962, and the comedy 'Pink Panther' featuring Peter Sellers - a success at the box office.
His first marriage to Patricia Walker, ended in 1967. He met with Andrews at gush 'Darling Lili,' and fell in love for the actress who starred in that film. They married in 1969.
Edwards won honorary Oscar in 2004. He has five children, namely Jennifer and Geoffrey from his first marriage, Emma Andrews from the first marriage, and Amelia Leigh and Joanna Lynne, along with Andrews adopted from Vietnam in the 1970s.
